All Media Mondays: Psycho

I suck this season.  I need a little encouragement; does anyone want me to keep posting??

In the mean time, here's what is perhaps the most famous scene in cinema history.  Enjoy :)

(Yes, I've posted this clip before.  But it's still pretty good!)

Halloween in April: "The Hell Bound Train"

I found a nice collection of some old, Halloween/Macabre themed poems on Shaktiweb.com.  The following is from an anonymous author.  Enjoy!

The Hell Bound Train

A Texas cowboy lay down on a barroom floor,
 Having drunk so much he could drink no more;
 So he fell asleep with a troubled brain
 To dream that he rode on a hell-bound train.

The engine with murderous blood was damp
 And was brilliantly lit with a brimstone lamp;
 An imp, for fuel, was shoveling bones,
 While the furnace rang with a thousand groans.

The boiler was filled with lager beer
 And the devil himself was the engineer;
 The passengers were a most motley crew-
 Church member, atheist, Gentile, and Jew,

Rich men in broad cloth, beggars in rags,
 Handsome young ladies, and withered old hags,
 Yellow and black men, red, brown, and white,
 All chained together-O God, what a sight!

While the train rushed on at an awful pace-
 The sulphurous fumes scorched their hands and face;
 Wider and wider the country grew,
 As faster and faster the engine flew.
 Louder and louder the thunder crashed
 And brighter and brighter the lightning flashed;
Hotter and hotter the air became
 Till the clothes were burned from each quivering frame.

 And out of the distance there arose a yell,
 "Ha, ha," said the devil, "we're nearing hell"
Then oh, how the passengers all shrieked with pain
 And begged the devil to stop the train.
 But he capered about and danced for glee,
 And laughed and joked at their misery.
 "My faithful friends, you have done the work
 And the devil never can a payday shirk.

 "You've bullied the weak, you've robbed the poor,
 The starving brother you've turned from the door;
 You've laid up gold where the canker rust,
 And have given free vent to your beastly lust.
 "You've justice scorned, and corruption sown,
 And trampled the laws of nature down.
 You have drunk, rioted, cheated, plundered, and lied,
And mocked at God in your hell-born pride.

 "You have paid full fare, so I'll carry you through,
 For it's only right you should have your due.
 Why, the laborer always expects his hire,
So I'll land you safe in the lake of fire,

"Where your flesh will waste in the flames that roar,
 And my imps torment you forevermore."
 Then the cowboy awoke with an anguished cry,
 His clothes wet with sweat and his hair standing high.

 Then he prayed as he never had prayed till that hour
 To be saved from his sin and the demon's power;
 And his prayers and his vows were not in vain,
For he never rode the hell-bound train.

All Media Mondays: Halloween Carols!

Why don't you surprise some neighbors with some of these carols this Christmas season!

Joy to the world,
It's Halloween.
The night of fright has come!
This time of year we wait.
We hope he won't be late.
The Great Pumpkin will come,
The Great Pumpkin will come,
The Great, The GREAT Pumpkin will come.

He rules the world,
On Hallow's Eve.
He's coming here tonight.
Let's go into the pumpkin patch
They'll put us in the booby hatch,
But we will have such fun,
But we will have such fun,
But we, But we will have such fun.

Spooky Night, Halloween Night,
All is cold, nothing's right.
Round yon pumpkin glowing away.
People singing in the doorway.
Sing in devilish glee-ee.
Singing in devilish glee.

Deck the Halls
Deck the halls with poison ivy,
fa la la la la, la la la la.
'Tis the season to be slimy,
fa la la la la, la la la la.
Don we now our strange apparel,
fa la la, la la la, la la la.
Troll the ancient Halloween carol,
fa la la la la, la la la la.
See the goblins rise before us,
fa la la la la, la la la la.
As we sing the Halloween chorus,
fa la la la la, la la la la.
Follow them as they ascend,
fa la la, la la la, la la la.
Join with all your loony friends,
fa la la la la, la la la la.

On the First Day of Halloween
On the First Day of Halloween, my Swamp Thing gave to me:

A hoot owl in a dead tree.
Two trick or treaters,
Three black cats,
Four skeletons,
Five Snicker bars,
Six goblins gobbling,
Seven pumpkins glowing,
Eight monsters shrieking,
Nine ghosts a-booing,
Ten ghouls a-groaning,
Eleven masks a-leering,
Twelve bats a-flying.

All Media Mondays: Halloweentown!

Halloweentown is one of my favorite films of the season!  I am a true product of the Disney Original Movie.  (Before HSM time...)  I'm talkin' Zenon, Smart House, Brink...  Ask me to name them all later.  It was an exciting day when I learned they had released many of these on DVD.  Guess who owns Halloweentown?

Anyway,  this film features a family consisting of a single mother, (like many Disney movies,) her two daughters, son, and a very eccentric grandmother played by the wonderful Debbie Reynolds. When grandma shows up on Halloween, strange things start to happen.  The oldest daughter Marnie, portrayed by Kimberly J. Brown, thinks that there may be more to her strong fascination with the odd and macabre.  When grandma encourages the behavior, mom gets angry.  So the kids follow their grandmother after she leaves in defeat to a strange looking bus-stop...  And land in Halloweentown!

It's cute.  It's fun.  It's Halloweenish!  Disney made a few more in this series, but, of course, the original is the best.  I can do two, Calabar's Revenge, and can gripe through three, Halloweentown High, but after that, there's no point.  It might only speak to my generation, but hey, I still suggest you give it a try ;)

How many Disney Original Movies can YOU name?

All Media Mondays: Halloween Theme

The Halloween theme, composed by the films creator, John Carpenter, is a great piece of horror film pop culture!  Like Tubular Bells, it's a great example of how a film's score can make the movie.
Enjoy!

All Media Mondays: This is Thriller!

While no, MJ's Thriller doesn't technically mention or have anything directly to do with Halloween, it's still always associated.  I think it better serves it's point today rather than on a Saturday (check out the categories if you're not sure what I'm talking about.)

Anyway, Thriller will never get old for me, and, especially with the grande opening of This Is It this past weekend, takes a very worthy spot as Halloween media for your Monday!

(Unfortunately, the only versions worth posting had advertisements.  Well worth it to get the whole video!)

I still have to learn this dance!  Anyone want to help?

All Media Mondays: iTunes has your Halloween

If you haven't got that "it's Halloween" feeling yet this year, check out iTunes for some inspiration!

They provide you with playlists, horror films, spooky episodes of old TV shows, and even some audiobooks, while breaking it down into categories: supernatural, horror, vampires, etc.

Plus much, much more!

I'm not sure which I'll go for first: It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, or an episode of The Munsters...

All Media Mondays: Hocus Pocus!

Hocus Pocus (1993) is one of those films that I MUST watch every Halloween! It's just plain fun.

For anyone who has never seen this film, Hocus Pocus follows a teenage boy in Salem, Massachusetts trying to find his place as the new kid. Max falls into trouble when he challenges a local legend and drags his young sister (played by Thora Birch) and high school love interest into the mess.

Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy play the Sanderson sisters on a quest to regain their youth, and subsequently, life back on earth. Max and crew battle the witch sisters with the help of the cursed cat, Binx, throughout the town's Halloween time festivities.

By the way, I have a cat named Binx ;)
